About Harmonic Hills

Where land, learning, and community come together to grow something deeper than retreat—a way of life.

Our Roots: A Living Experiment in Regeneration

Harmonic Hills is rooted in over 30 years of land stewardship by the Ohler family, whose relationship with this 100-acre parcel near Sangudo, Alberta, has always been one of care, observation, and restoration.

From the very beginning, this was more than a farm. It was a place of learning and experimentation—where the land was not treated as a resource to extract from, but a living teacher to listen to. Regenerative grazing practices were introduced early on, with rotational patterns that strengthened both livestock and soil. What began as small shifts became long-term transformation: pastures revived, water began to hold, and the land started to breathe differently.

Forestry work followed, with a commitment to both planting and thinning. Tree planting days became community rituals—friends and neighbours planting side by side, soup simmering on the stove, stories taking root as deeply as the seedlings. Selective logging was approached with care and uncertainty, yet five years later, the results speak: light reaching the forest floor, new growth emerging, ecosystems renewing themselves.

The seasonal creek running through the land became a teacher of its own. Shaped by beaver activity over time, the family chose to collaborate rather than control. Swales and water redirection projects were built not to dominate, but to mimic—to support soil health, reduce erosion, and steward watershed resilience in an era of increasing wildfire risk.

The result is not a polished enterprise—it’s a living example of regeneration in practice. A place where soil, systems, and spirit are tended with love.

Now, a new generation is being invited in—not to start from scratch, but to continue a story already unfolding.

What We're Growing Next

Harmonic Hills is in a season of becoming—growing from a homestead into a cooperative ecovillage. While the vision is rooted in decades of land stewardship, the next chapter isn’t something we’re building alone.

We’re transitioning into a member-guided land trust, a model that honours shared responsibility, long-term care, and reciprocal contribution. This means the future of Harmonic Hills isn’t top-down or pre-designed—it’s shaped by those who choose to walk this path with us. We’re seeking people who feel called to live close to the land, contribute their gifts, and co-create a future rooted in cooperation.

Alongside this vision, we’re growing a retreat and learning space where facilitators and community members can offer intimate gatherings, seasonal workshops, and land-based education. Our aim is not to scale up, but to deepen—hosting the kind of slow, soulful experiences that grow resilience and relationship.

We believe the answers we need are already among us—and we’re creating a place where they can take root, together.

Guiding our work and our way of being

Our Shared Values

Care for the Earth

We tend the land like it’s family.
Everything we do starts with respect for soil, water, trees, and the more-than-human world.

Care for Each Other

 We lift each other up.
Community means showing up, sharing what we can, and making space for all voices.

Share What We Have

There is enough when we share.
Abundance grows when we trade, give freely, and value every gift—big or small.

Everyone Has Something to Offer

All kinds of wisdom live here.
Whether you bring stories, laughter, tools, or time—your gifts matter.

We Learn By Doing

Mistakes are how we grow.
This is a place to try, tinker, explore, and learn side by side.

Decisions Belong to All

We lead together.
We practice open communication and consensus-based decision making, where every voice matters and all members help guide the path ahead.
